About the Author

Mike Malina is founder and Director of Energy Solutions Associates -a Building Services Engineering Practice in the field of Sustainable Engineering, Energy Management and Training. He has 30 years' related experience working at the start of his career in the offshore oil industry, then working in both the public and private sectors in related buildings and building engineering services sector.   He is the principal trainer for the Building & Engineering Services Association (formally HVCA), Building Regulations Competent Persons Certification scheme for commercial and domestic HVACR work.  Over many years Mike has conducted hundreds of building energy audits and has never been defeated in finding ways to save energy.  In 2010 he won the HVR Consultant of the year award and in 2011 the Innovation and Sustainability outstanding contribution to the Industry award.  Mike has spoken at many industry conferences and seminars, building a reputation for saying it as it is and cutting through all the ‘greenwash’.

About the Author
Susan Cummins Miller worked as a field geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and taught geology and oceanography before turning to writing. She is a research affiliate and SIROW Scholar with the University of Arizona’s Southwest Institute for Research on Women, and the editor of A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers of the American Frontier, 1800–1922 (TTUP). Hoodoo is her fourth Frankie MacFarlane mystery.

Fascinating desert tales...I am really enjoying the blend of geology and mystery. Frankie has grown so much from a student searching for answers in book 1 to a professional PROVIDING the answers in book three. I hope she keeps them coming!

A Gem in the Quarry

Miller's mystery novel is thrilling and engaging--the perfect book for a fun read. Frankie, the main character, centers the book and is eminently likeable--an important factor for me. She is funny and smart and enterprising. The western setting is amazingly realistic and the geology is not too heavy-handed. It added an interesting dimension as did the inner-workings of a University science department. I highly recommend!

This time we went to California along the coast, old stomping grounds for me. This time Frankie is in love and a fiancé. She kicks butt right along with her two hunky male cohorts. I can't wait to see what happens next!

If you knew in your heart of hearts that the Roman Catholic Church has always been the most ignorant and corrupt organization on earth, this book pretty much confirms that. The book documents over five hundred years of kidnapping, murder, kick backs, on and on. In recent memory, the infamous Ratline, transporting Nazi and Croatian war criminals to South America, still smarts. Also, the buying off of politicians in Poland, leading to financial disasters, while the Church bleeds its parishioners, is the true character of a recent Pope, considered for sainthood?

sub-society and research concerns

Truly not a bad historical reference book of the Church. Providing insight into each important conclave and the divisions therein were, for me, interesting. Also in dealing with the papal states, their maintenance and eventual loss, was somewhat informative. The dealings of various European rulers and leaders with the Church added to my knowledge some new information.

My concern, and I'll admit it's a small one, deals with the fact gathering of groups like the Octogonus Circle, the Society of the Thirteen and others. What an ominous name - Octogonus Circle. We are so intrigued today with anything secret and hidden and as readers we enjoy conspiracies and spy-like games. Why is it that a group such as one of these, that has existed for nearly 500 years is basically non-existent on the Internet? On Amazon, The Octogonus Circle, by Peter Harris is only offered in Spanish and appears to be the only book like it anywhere. This book is not even referenced in Mr Frattini's bibliography! Moreover, there is nothing on the Internet aside these two books referencing the Circle. The same exists with the Society of the Thirteen, minus one book or at least the one that I could find.

I do ask where he gathered the information on these groups.

While I concede that what happens within governments is on most levels unknown to us. We truly have no clue, so I did find this book interesting. But I must wonder about certain aspects of this book, even though the bibliography is well listed - minus one aspect...

nancy drew's former river hieghts friend who is a nurse at present,has a patient who is in amnesia.she seeks nancy's help to regain his identity.she has a ring which belonged to the patient who was in amnesia.lots of things happen interconnecting the stories of a missing sister to the secret of the intriuging ring and a major problem in river hieght's summer fest.i highly recommend reading this book and it is a good selection for a library too!

Not Nancy's Finest

I'm a huge Nancy Drew fan, so it pains me to say that this book is completely sub-par. The book suffers from two main problems - there are so many mini-mysteries going on that it feels silly, even when everything is wrapped up, and the characters, for lack of a better word, are whiny. Ned whines, Mr. Drew whines, even Nancy whines a bit. Lesser issues come from clues you see coming a mile away and troubling things that aren't really explained, like about the Ramaswami.

In short, if you're looking for a Nancy Drew book, don't get this one. If you're a hardcore fan and must read it anyway, get it from the library. DO NOT BUY IT. You will only be disappointed.

I love the author Carolyn Keene' s Nancy Drew books and that is why I decided to try this one. It is so suspenseful, the details are exquisite, and the story is wonderfully written. I loved the action ,the suspense , and how everything turns out right in the end.

Fiction Beyond the Novel

Just when you think there's nothing left to find in fiction, a book like this comes along. I read the same stories in the New Yorker and ordered the book immediately. The vignettes in flash fiction form all deal with the relationship between fathers and sons. Some are funny. Some are poignant. All are incredibly creative. Some even read like copy for a local news teleprompter.

This book is fantastic, so long as you are comfortable with the flash fiction format and aren't looking for a collection of short stories or a full-length novel. Sachs is easily one of the most creative and detailed writers to come around in a long time, and I look forward to whatever he does next.

This was just okay. I liked that this involved a pretty unique shifter but other than a crazy ex-boyfriend him being rare was never really an issue. This book was more about his inability to believe that people could be genuine friends and want him for him and no other reason. I enjoyed the story but there was just something lacking.
