About the Author
Susheng Wang is Professor of Economics at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He's held the position since 2011. He was Visiting Scholar at the UCLA's Department of Economics from January to July 1998, and served as Assistant Professor at Concordia University's Department of Economics from 1991–1993. Prof Wang has published articles with International Economic Review, Economica, Economic Theory, International Review of Law and Economics and many others.

Each volume takes on a swath of related topics, from Stars and Atoms to Computing, and Chemistry in Action to Ecology and Environment. Each book opens and closes with extensive quick-reference sections, sandwiching approximately 50 single-spread articles on somewhat broader subjects. The copious illustrations, a mix of sharply reproduced photos and digital art, expertly illuminate principles discussed in the text and present the occasional arresting image: a large cutaway of a steam locomotive, for instance, or a gorgeous shot of the vertical limestone peaks in China's Guilin Province. Cross references are confined to the glossaries, but each volume has an individual index, cumulated in a separate volume (a new feature of this edition) that also contains annotated lists of scientific organizations and recommended Web sites, among other features. Readers after biographical information, however, or science projects, will have to look elsewhere. This set doesn't match the Raintree Steck-Vaughn Illustrated Science Encyclopedia (Raintree, 1996) for breadth, but it does cover its chosen areas in greater depth, and frequently with more up-to-date information. Consider the New Encyclopedia as a replacement for the first edition, or as a significant collection strengthener for midsize or larger libraries supporting strong science programs.

This set is an update to the original New Encyclopedia of Science, which was published in 1995. It consists of nine volumes, eight of them devoted to a particular field of modern science: "Matter and Energy," "Animals and Plants," "Chemistry in Action," "Stars and Atoms," "Earth and Other Planets," "Ecology and Environment," "Computing," and "Evolution and Genetics." The set is intended for both general readers with quick questions and students interested in specific scientific topics. The majority of each volume, about 100 pages, is a narrative consisting of approximately 50 topical sections (for example, "Hydrocarbon Chains," "Patterns of Animal Growth," "The Human Genome Project"), each two to four pages in length. Highlighted terms refer the reader to the other major component of the volume, "Keywords," an alphabetic mini-encyclopedia containing more than 400 brief entries. This "Keywords" section cross-references back to the thematic topics. The cross-referencing is only within each volume.

Each volume begins with a "Knowledge Map" that shows how the pertinent areas of science are interrelated as well as defining the major fields. Next, there is an extensive "Time Chart" that traces the development of the science through the key discoveries that shaped it. Each volume concludes with its own "Factfile" offering a wealth of quick information for the casual browser, including data, tables, and statistics chosen for their relevance to the subject. In addition, each volume has its own index and subject-specific recommended further reading list. New to this edition is the ninth volume, which has a full set index and a more general reading list. It also contains a listing of scientific institutions worldwide, recommended Web sites, and places to visit. Other changes include the addition of plant life to the volume on animal life, advances in computer technology, and updates to the "Keywords" and time lines.

The text is written for the less well informed reader and should be accessible to most. The layout is bright and appealing. Color photographs and illustrations appear on almost every page. All of the illustrations include thorough annotations that nicely supplement the text.

Each of these new volumes is excellent as a stand-alone. The addition of a cumulative index enhances their value as a reference set that would be a useful addition to the science collection in public and high-school libraries. RBB

About the Author
Christopher Pramuk is associate professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of Sophia: The Hidden Christ of Thomas Merton and Hope Sings, So Beautiful: Graced Encounters across the Color Line both from Liturgical Press. The recipient of the Catholic Theological Society of America's 2009 Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award, he has also received the International Thomas Merton Society's 2011 Thomas Merton Award, and several best essay awards from the Catholic Press Association. A lifelong musician and student of African American spirituality, he has led numerous workshops on the healing of race relations in society and the church as well as retreats on the life and writings of Thomas Merton.

The Saving Grace and Hope of the Divine Feminine

  Thomas Merton found Sophia–the Love and Mercy of God, ever so gently at play in his encounters with others, as well as all of creation–key in revealing the saving grace of the Divine feminine.
  This for me, is not only a sign of real hope in the daily barrage of violence, atrocities and self-centered political posturing, but a good reason, whether male or female, to give Christopher Pramuk's new book priority on your spiritual reading list.
  This latest remarkable work by Pramuk offers Merton's experience of Sophia and ongoing discovery of his true self, in a concise format. In addition it works beautifully as a primer in offering a fuller understanding of Pramuk's previous book–Sophia: The Hidden Christ of Thomas Merton–a work acclaimed by many as a landmark in Merton studies.

how much all of creation is connected. He writes in such a poetic style. I recommend this

A beautiful conversation in feminist theology

A beautiful conversation in feminist theology. With a balance between narrative and scholarly writing the text is very approachable. I often found myself flipping through the pages with quick ease pausing only to reflect and add margin notes. The only problem with this book is that if you allow someone to borrow it, you'll be forced to purchase another as you'll not see it returning to your possession.

About the Author
Ryan Kurczak graduated from Fairmont State University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and minor in Philosophy. After college he attended the Mountain State School of Massage, and completed training with The American Institute of Vedic Studies and the European Institute of Vedic Studies in the subjects of Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotish. He has studied astrology intensively under Richard Fish and Ernst Wilhelm. Ryan was initiated by Roy Eugene Davis, a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. He teaches group meditation and Kriya Yoga practices, at various Yoga and New Thought Centers, and works with sincere students individually. Clear and generous information

I am new at kryia yoga through SRF organization. The instructions in the lessons sent to me were not clear enough for me to understand how to proceed with the technique. Ryan is generous with information, uses words I can relate in order to practice the kryia yoga technique appropriately.... hopefully.Very helpful in assisting me to follow the path.

Excellent Guide to the Yoga Sutras!

I highly recommend this new commentary of the Yoga Sutras by Ryan Kurczak. It's been a while since I have read a commentary so fresh and full of new perspective. Ryan demonstrates time and again his high knowledge of Yoga and its processes in each and every verse of the Sutras. Ryan Kuczak is a yogi through and through and has firsthand knowledge of many of the higher states of Consciousness as described by Patanjali. When a Spiritual text is written by someone who has experienced the Spiritual states described in the text, it is obvious to the reader; there is a certain "fragrance" to the words on the page. Kriya Yoga has a "fragrance" of Truth and authenticity in its pages. Ryan's writings are permeated in the essence of the Kriya Yoga lineage of Gurus and his Spiritual Teacher, Roy Eugene Davis. Anyone who has never read the Sutras before will really enjoy Kriya Yoga, and likewise, someone who has read the Sutras many times can also benefit from Ryan's fresh perspectives.

An Ideal Guide to Self Knowledge

This is by far the most clear and direct commentary on the yoga sutras that I have found. Many authors add long commentary with lots of flowery sanskrit words that go on and on. If one is a sanskrit scholar then that is great; but it ends up leaving the rest of us (westerners especially) somewhat confused about the meaning and complexity of a verse.
And then other commentaries I have found have seemed too technical in explanation, not simple enough in my opinion.

In both cases, I did not fully understand the meaning of some verses of the Yoga Sutras until I read Ryan's commentary. It presents a great balance between the technical and poetic styles of explanation.
He describes and explains the sutras in his own words, and in plain english. And to me, this solidifies his understanding of the Sutras and reveals how much he has contemplated them. If one really knows what they are talking about, then they can explain it in their own words very simply, and dont have to rely on the Sanskrit jargon.

About the Author
Janice Kamrin holds a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania, and she has taught, written, and lectured widely on the subject of ancient Egypt. She currently works with Zahi Hawass, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, on many of his publications.

Fantastic book, would have liked clearer examples

Buy this book, you'll find nothing better to get you started, but I do wish there was someone here with me with whom I could dispute. You're given the vocabulary and you're given the rules as they're understood, and you're given instruction to remain flexible, really flexible, but honestly, there's not a single exercise that isn't frustrating. Matching the solutions to the problems often left me wondering how the author managed to get to that solution with the material provided. I do wish there had been clearer examples. Also, I didn't much care for new material being sprung within the exercises ostensively for practicing the fresh martial just provided, on matter how minor, that sends the student scrurring scrounging the indexes and online for something that resembles the apparently new shape that appears within the example and stops the transliteration dead in its tracks.

I have gone through all the exercises and carefully studied each of the solutions, compared them with my own replications of the exercises and my solution, I have hand-copied every single symbol onto index cards, and used those cards, every title, every phrase, and I've copied each exercise into a separate notebook. I've copied the Gardiner's sign list onto cards as well as the vocabulary provided in the book, that's including the indexes, on both cards and, using Photoshop, I've copied another more extensive set onto computer files for cross-referencing and for extra symbol handling, so that's twice. I'm saying that I re-wrote by hand the symbols in the book twice. My index cards and computer files number in the low thousands. Throughout all of the exercises, I have failed to get one single exercise 100% correct, and that has been frustrating. Now finished with the book I feel unqualified to interpret with confidence the text on any given painting, carving, or object because my answers have not once matched precisely the solutions.

But they've come real close.

So I could probably b.s. my way through a museum tour convincingly and along the way display a depth of understanding that is real, pretending a confidence I do not possess, but I'm not like that.

I understand there was no codified standardized uniform spelling that endured through the ages, I get that language evolves, and I understand abbreviation and their habit of odd redundancy and I do appreciate the love of puns and I understand individual artistry will not match exactly typeface, but I just flat do not accept that a scribe, an artist, and a craftsman would go to all the trouble of carving an elaborate bird into stone that is not a part of a phrase, a word, or a phoneme so I'm forced to challenge the solution provided even though I unqualified to do so, nor would they omit a symbol that is required to distinguish it from something similar, nor would they be so silly as to confuse through carelessness a sloppily drawn eye with a mouth or with a handleless basket, all of which have similar but distinct shapes. I mean, come on! An eye is not a mouth, and a sun is not a placenta, a wren is not a sparrow, and a vulture is not an owl, which in turn is not quail chick, just as a seat is not a loaf of bread, all signs that can appear similar depending on who drew them or what damage has come to them, their presence means something just as their absence means something and conflating them means arriving at divergent interpretations. Honestly, in the end I conclude that a large part of all this is pure guesswork, educated guesswork for sure, and advanced extrapolation certainly, but still opinion. In the end, and now I've finished the book so for me this stage is ended, the most I can hope for is to extrapolate with others in accordance with what I've learned here, but I'm hardly prepared to aver with confidence that I know for certain exactly what the text on any given object is attempting to convey.

Having said all that, and having done all that I've said, I must hasten to add that going through this book has advanced my appreciation for the language immeasurably, and to me that is important. I do recommend this book. You should buy it. It's a bargain at twice the price, and if you would go through it as I have then I'm certain your appreciation will advance considerably for all things Egyptian, and if you would just flip through it an eighth as thoroughly as I have gone through it then you'll still get your money's worth.

I think it's the best book for any one that wants to learn ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and lot's of history and culture
along the way.
It's organized perfectly and never gets boring.
The pictures are in high detail so you won't miss anything, and brings real stories from inside the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
The grammar and vocabulary is produced in an easy way of learning for anyone.
this book convinced me that I want to be an Egyptologist.

I really enjoy to have this book in my hands! X3 The music is like what most reviewers said easy to intermediate and very beautiful to learn the amazing songs Yoko Shimomura composed and appreciate his time and effort he out in the game. Also if you are familiar with the music from Kingdom Hearts, getting the notes should not be too much of a problem but getting the tempo would be easy to get very quick. For pianists definitely something nice to do when you want to take a break from practicing long classical pieces. :)

I loved it definetly better then the first two books.This book starts out with information from Earth Angels and Realms of the Earth Angels since that is the case I am going to get rid of both of them.Because this book is the only book you need to have.This book includes more information on Incarnated Angels,Incarnated Elementals,Star people,and Wise Ones.Updated information on the core realms and information on new realms such as Aladdin Genies,Mystic Angels,Merpeople and more.I wish this book had been out while taking the realm reader's course it would have helped me out alot.Glad I have the book now to help me remember information reguarding the realms.A really great reference book to have especially if you are a realm reader.Knowing about the different realms is important it helps you know more about your life purpose and how to relate more to others.
