About the Author
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Janine studied electrical engineering at CalTech and went on to serve in the U.S. military. There she worked with avionics systems before switching to medical school, only to return to the military as a flight surgeon. Her interest in programming began in junior high with the Apple II, and she applied this interest throughout her military career to various projects from the early transition of maintenance parts tracking from paper to computers, writing personnel tracking database systems and proprietary electronic medical records programs before such commercial products were available.After leaving military service, Janine turned her favorite pastime of programming into a full time freelance career, initially developing iOS applications before delving into Android development. Her recent endeavors resulted in winning entries for two of five categories in the Samsung Hope for the Children competition for educational games development, which are to be released later this year. She is particularly interested in 3D games and augmented reality.

Inspired by place, but goes far beyond...

Superbly crafted poetry! Double, and sometimes triple, meanings observed in geographical location translate deeper concepts that truly found a home in my soul. There are so many surprises, one of my favorites was Tectonic Shift; a phenomenal poem that is layered in meaning and highlights a hopeful rebirth. As a writer who revels in inspiration of "place," (see Desert Ramblings - Arid Ebbs of Consciousness), I found this collection to go far beyond the geographical starting point. Finally, so many Indie poets collect 30-40 pages of poems and dub the collection a book; I greatly admire poetry collections that are quantitative as well as qualitative. A spectacular read, and I hope to see more from Alistair Davidson!

Just from the front cover you can see how good this book is for anyone who wants to create embroidered flowers or birds. I have long admired Trish Burr and her books. Subtitled 'Fresh Ideas for Beginners', this book encompasses work that would satisfy embroiderers of any level. There is a detailed introduction to long and short stitch with step by step instructions enhanced with appropriate photos. Trish really does use her needle like a paintbrush. The projects are wonderful and there are ideas on how to use your finished embroidery. This a lovely book for any embroiderer.-KarenPlatt.co.uk

She Holds Your Hands As You Learn

Take a look at the title and cover pictures. When you combine the two, you may ask yourself, "Can a beginner really create embroidery like that?" With the expertise of Trish's teaching, you too, can embroider birds and flowers which look alive.

We open the book and see materials and preparation. Mrs. Burr not only explains what materials are needed but, also expounds on which is best for the job. A good example is the section of needles. We are told crewel 9 is for two strands of thread and number 10 is for one strand. The lesson does not stop there. She lets us know Hemmings, Colonial or John James is best. Thread, hoops and frames, magnifying lamp and fabric is also given.

The photographs on page 16 were awe inspiring. Her "The Malachite Kingfisher" and "The Portrait of Elise" are truly a work of art!

Now we get to the lessons. Trish teaches us techniques such as guidelines, starting and ending thread and stitches. Each portion has beautiful, sharp pictures to help us understand what she is saying. I enjoy the section, Practice Motifs, where we are given motifs to learn how to shade. Again, we are given the materials for each technique. Each project uses common DMC and Anchor embroidery floss.

The projects will appear over whelming at first but, Trish holds our hand and takes us step by step through each project. Level one is for beginners, level two is moving on from beginner and level three is some experience required. Level one is flowers such as Cerise Anemone. Mrs. Burr explains materials, preparation and method. The lesson doesn't stop there. She goes into detail teaching us the outlines, leaves, petals, and flower center. Each process has detailed instructions and close-up photos.

Step two is more advanced flowers. As we enter level three, Trish really shows her teaching talent when she introduces the needle painting projects, Apricot Dahlia, Red Poppy, Little Bee-eater and Racquet-tailed Roller. For beginners, birds are too advanced to attempt. Trish takes us through the usual steps. This is not where she ends. Tail feathers, branch, back feathers, breast feathers, neck feathers, eye, beak, head feathers, toes and claws all have detailed instructions on how to paint with needle and thread.

The last page in the book is a list of suppliers. Trish gives information on where you can purchase all the materials you will need for the projects in her book. Again, don't look at the cover and feel this is too advanced for you. Perfect book for beginners

I had been doing some historical research on Chinese silk needle painting and became amazed at the skills. I wondered if I could learn how to do this. I bought this book after reading the reviews from others and references from embroidery teachers. As soon as it arrived I grabbed my supplies and started on the first lesson. My husband was speechless. When I completed my first flower I showed a friend who is a skilled seamstress and quilter and she said, "You learned this from a book?".

I definitely recommend this to be the first book purchased by a beginner. I like the simple practice lesson which teaches you one new aspect at a time. Each project is even broken down into steps. The instructional diagrams and photos are designed so that you know exactly how to proceed. Oh, did I forget to mention that the only thing I've ever done with a needle was sew on a button or hem?

Needle painting embroidery

This is an great book for all those people that want to try this type of embroidery. The materials listed are easily obtained, the patterns are full size and are easily traced on to the fabric. Each step of the work is explained in both pictures as well as text. The patterns are small and the will not overwhelm the beginner. They would be of value to everyone to use for small gifts such as needle cases,Christmas decorations, small pictures, pincushions or scissors fob.

Freedom is not free

I haven't read very many of the modern comic books (aka graphic novels), but I remember buying tons of them at the drugstore for a dime apiece when I was a kid in the 1950s. I decided to give "Radio Free Amerika #1" a go, and I enjoyed it. This episode serves as the prologue of a longer story, so it's mostly getting the reader up to speed with background stories and setting the stage for the action to come. The cover image of DJ Mose B., with a pistol in one hand and a microphone in the other, is a great visual representation of his role as both a combatant and a disk jockey leading a desperate struggle against the enemy who has taken over and occupied the United States. With several major American cities reduced to radioactive rubble, many Americans were dead or living in refugee camps. The situation was grim, but Americans were beginning to fight back. Carl Moses Benjamin, known as "Mose B," was a DJ before the war, and he's determined to use his hip hop DJ skills at his pirate radio station Radio Free Amerika to inspire Americans to fight the invaders.

Some of the other characters in the series were briefly introduced, but this issue is mainly about Mose B and his background. It looks like a suspenseful, action-filled series is in the works, so I've already downloaded Radio Free Amerika #2, which I'm looking forward to reading.
