Digging

With "Field Work" the metaphor of "digging" with which Seamus Heaney began his first volume of poetry ("Death of a Naturalist") has become a succinct and overarching symbol of his entire literary endeavour. In that poem "digging" comes to connote the agricultural roots of his childhood (and of the Irish people) but also the search for word-fodder that his poetry enacts. "Field Work" continues to explore these concerns in a powerful collection of poems. Here the deeply personal ("Glanmore Sonnets"), primarly poetic ("Elegy") and cautiously political ("Triptych", "The Toome Road") sit comfortably alongside one another. While Heaney (as the most famous voice in contemporary Irish literature) has been repeatedly criticised for his silence on the Ulster situation, this volume shows that (as in "North") he is able to deal with its complex issues without taking sides. Always his concern is for the impartial victim (the position he himself assumes, that of the "unmolested orchid" ["Triptych 1"]) and the place he or she occupies among the combatants. "Casualty" describes a friendly but laconic pub drinker (apolitical and an acquaintance of Heaney's) who was killed by the British for defying curfew. "Triptych 1" includes the description of "Two young men with rifles on the hill" - we do not know if they are Unionists or I.R.A., they are two sides of the same coin. Heaney's continual "digging" allows him to move beneath the emotive surface of events and to unearth their common history, culture, landscape, experience. In "Field Work" the very poetry with which Heaney draws these moments is itself a tool to pare bloody and partisan politics back to its single seed, the common root of the Irish field and furrow.

Stays with you long after...

This was my first exposure to Seamus Heaney and his work (other than seeing the portly fellow with his unkempt white hair walking purposefully around campus here in Cambridge.) It is still my favorite collection of his work. Like all previous reviewers, I will not critique any particular poem, but only give the volume what can be one of my highest forms of praise: The poems have such a resonance that they have stayed with me long after putting the book down. That is a rare feat, in any artistic genre.

Field Work---Heaney not is Yeats successor, but conqueror

Seamus Heaney, in "Field Work" makes accessible what is best about poetry and, especially, modern Irish poetry. Heaney's impact on modern poetry will certainly extend on into the centuries as he lays down his words in beautiful rythmic language, a language forgotten by many contemporaries, but coming back with many new poets. Heaney's protrait of Irish life, the "troubles", and just his love of people and the land makes this a must read not only for those who love good poetry, but wish to understand the beauty, people, politics, and history of a great people to be free. Heaney writes no bad poems, remains accessible to the occasional reader, and offers more than enough solid food for the critic and student of poetics to keep all happy for long after the read.

Ebook hard to read on Kindle App

I bought this ebook 4 days ago. The content looks pretty good.
The main issue is that this version is not a print replica. And that's a shame. It's so hard to read on the Mac. Kindle app turned out to be very sensitive to Apple Magic Mouse. You touch the mouse and it turns the pages all the time. You need to be quite patient. It's not so good to read on the Mac Book Air as well.

It has been hard to study this way. I hope they fix it and update it to the print replica as it happened to the First Aid 2016.

The designs have holiday themes but you will find that many of the patterns lend themselves quite well to many other types of cards. Try using different color of cardstock and threads for a totally different effect!! This book was created for true embroiders. I wish you much enjoyment and success in your creative endeavours.

A bit pricey for it's size

I was excited to get this book and use some of the ideas for Christmas cards. I was a bit disappointed when I actually saw it. It is a very small book with under 50 pages costing almost $17.00. What is sort of neat and confusing at the same time is that the instructions are in four different languages. It has some ideas to use beading with the stitching. If you are looking for a book that says "WOW! I can use alot of these ideas, this isn't the book for you. I would rate this as just an ok type of paper embroidery book. Not excellent, not completely bad either. Just ok.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse entered the paper airplane scene in 1984 with his self-published pamphlet, "Aero-gami: F-14 Tomcat Fighter." A biologist by training, he went on to become one of the most celebrated natural history origami artists, and has produced dozens of books, kits, and videos.

Richard L. Alexander has worked full-time with LaFosse since 2003. Alexander makes paper, teaches and designs origami, manages the photography, videography, commercial projects and Origamido Studio gallery spaces and exhibitions.

bought this for my husband who loves all things aeronautic. bought it with the little motor for paper planes, and it is a wonderful book on the subject. It also comes with a dvd containing an expert who shows in great detail the actual folding of planes. anyone interested in this subject will enjoy this publication immensely.

Ronald M. Holmes is Coroner, in the Jefferson County Coroner's office and Professor Emeritus of Justice Administration at the University of Louisville. He is the author of several books, among them Profiling Violent Crimes, Sex Crimes, and Serial Murder. He is also the author of more than 50 articles appearing in scholarly publications. He is Vice President of the National Center for the Study of Unresolved Homicides and has completed more than 500 psychological profiles for police departments across the United States. He received his doctorate from Indiana University.

Good book, as usual

The Holmes' have regularly produced a series of high quality books on serial murder, sex crimes and other criminal justice topics. This latest book adds to their repetoire with an interesting and easy to read book on suicide.

I would say that this book focuses more on the outcome side of suicide...meaning the sociological or investigative side of suicide. The authors do cover material on the psychology of suicide, but I think that the real insights here are investigative. Indeed, one of the highlights of the book are the real suicide notes that are presented throughout the book which offer a lot of insight into the final thoughts of some of the individuals who have committed suicide.

This text would make an excellent text for future investigators of death scenes. Also this would make a good supplemental text to an abnormal psyche course (where I may try it myself next semester). Finally this is a good read for anyone interested in the topic. Highly recommended.

Very good read on several baffling stories

I stumbled upon this book by searching for the missing 411 books. Three of the cases I've heard discussed on missing 411 are talked about in great detail here and the cases of William Bradford Bishop Jr as well as Robert Eric Rudolph. Both of those cases I remember from unsolved mysteries. This is a great read for anyone wanting to imagine all the secrets those foggy heavily forested mountains have to hide.

Awesome sissy secretary cuckold story!

Awesome story of a seemingly powerless wife who takes control of her husband and forces him to become very lady like. She gets his boss, Wayne, involved and they have fun turning Mike into Michelle. Eventually Michelle becomes very docile and he serves his wife and Wayne as the prototypical housewife!

Very believable plot, use of a strong hormonal cream breaks down husbands resistance and the threats of exposure bring him along at a slow but steady pace. Definitely worth the time.
