Excellent book that is very accurat

When I first found out I had scoliosis one of the first things my mother did was give me a copy of this book. The book Deenie is about a thirteen year old girl who was thinking about becoming a model when she learns that she, beautiful Deenie has scoliosis. Judy Blume so accuratly described the feelings and emotions of Deenie that it felt as though she was writing about me. Untill I had read this book I felt as if I was the only one going through this even though doctors had told me there were other girls my age with scoliosis. This was such an excellent book that the only time I could put it down was to wipe the tears from my eyes. This is the perfect book for any girl especially one who has scoliosis.

one of Blume's better books

The relationships between Deenie and her mother, father, and sister are very well thought-out. I admit I was scandalized when I first read this book in seventh grade at the makeout scene between Deenie and Buddy, but it certainly didn't encourage me to go out and do that myself, and as for masturbation, Blume is VERY VAGUE and merely wishes to point out that this is normal, which it is, as any two-year-old could tell you if two-year-olds could talk well enough. People who want this book banned on a couple of minor details are missing the whole point of the book, which is about a teenager who is trying to do the right thing amidst a whole lot of physical and emotional barriers. A good read.

Wish There Was More

"Deenie" piqued my curosity since it appears regularly on the ALA "Frequently Challenged" list, and even in my home county library there is a note in the catalog saying, "No copies available in any library." I was able to buy the book easily enough, however, and after reading it, I find the challenges groundless and saddening. There is nothing to fear in "Deenie." If I had a daughter, I would have no trouble letting her read it, and as it is, I wouldn't stop my son either.

That being said, "Deenie" is no "Face on the Milk Carton." The characters are painted believeablty with a surprising economy, but just as they become really engaging, the book ends. I would like it better if we were able to follow Deenie through all four years of her treatment and observe more of her character development, see how the relationship between Deenie and her sister develops, and see if her mother is able to "grow up" a little more.

For perhaps the most interesting irony of the story is that Deenie's confinement in the Milwaukee brace really sets her free. Free from her selfish and domineering mother, free from the enculturated stereotypes that keep Deenie from talking to (or even looking at) any people with visible health issues, and free from virtually all of her social inhibitions. In many ways, her diagnosis is the best thing that could have happened. It becomes the catalyst for her development as an independent young woman, and not just the daughter of her parents.

There is also a lot of material in this little book for further discussion and study. Blume manages to cover the details of scoliosis without becoming too stiff, and provides resources for more current information. The relationships between Deenie and her two friends is subtly nuanced; an amazing achievement, considering how few sentences are devoted to them. Blume has an eye for detail, and is able to get the most out of the short scenes. Finally, Deenie's father provides a sterling example of good parenting, once he rises to the occasion, illustrating admirably when to yield and when to stand firm.

While "Deenie" is not as impressive an achievement as "The Face on the Milk Carton" or "The Pigman," it is certainly a worthwhile read. There is no reason that it should be suppressed: I plan to write a letter to my community library, and I would encourage otheres to stand up against such cowardly censorship in their communities as well.

P.S. I contacted my local librarian, who assured me that the catalog listing was misleading. In fact, there were at least four copies in circulation, although the one at my local branch seemed to have disappeared. Certainly, this is good news, but I was really touched by how enthusiastic she was about my concern. I was rather afraid of being treated like a crackpot. I think I'll sign up for some volunteer work the next time I've over there...

Sexy, entertaining, fun

There was a time when ships were the only form of transportation between the old world in Europe and the new colonies across the waves. In those days, the oceans were full of bold pirates, waiting to seize large war-ships and merchant vessels and rob them of the riches they carried. There was not a port or tavern where the sailors did not recount the tales of the notorious Captain Black Wade, the terror of the seven seas...

So begins Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love, a beautifully illustrated and surprisingly engaging book from Bruno Gmunder by Italian duo Franze and Andarle. Officially a "gay adult comic," to simply call it that does it a major injustice; this book is visually stunning, with a story that not only flows, but flows well- and somehow allows you to escape almost immediately into the story. Black Wade brilliantly combines rich graphics with a captivating tale- of pirates!

Of course the story is simple, as it should be. It's also superbly crafted, however, by someone with an excellent grasp of language, expressing much in so few words. Of course, most people won't be focusing on the words- and who can blame them when the images are this hot? Between the dark, mysterious and slightly hirsute Captain Black Wade, the young, strong, smooth blonde Lieutenant Wilkins, and the men of both the pirate ship and the British fleet, there's enough eye candy - and resulting sexual encounters - for a short series, yet somehow it's never gratuitous.

And while the story may be somewhat predictable and borrow from old legends - and stereotypes - it's also enthralling and highly erotic... with a surprising ability to arouse. The warmth and detail of the illustrations brings the images to life; you'll likely find yourself rooting for the captured young Lieutenant even as you're secretly eager for Captain Black Wade to take advantage of him. With kidnapping, pillaging, pirate attacks, and plenty of lustful encounters, this is a passionate, wild story... with a happy ending.

Black Wade deserves a spot in your bookshelf, where you can pull it out on a quiet Sunday afternoon and escape into a quick fantasy. You may want to make sure you're alone though...

Expensive, but so worth it!

This book popped up under one of Amazon's "recommended also" features. I hesitated to buy it since it seemed a little expensive. However, I found that it was well worth the price. "Black Wade" is a gay romance graphic novel - similar to hard yaoi in theme and tone. And I do mean HARD yaoi, this book contains very graphic sex scenes, including noncon at the beginning. A typical yaoi manga runs about $12.95 to as much as $15.95 for a trade paperback in black and white. This is not only a hardcover edition, it is also FULL COLOR throughout like standard graphic novels. So the higher price is actually reasonable. There is no dust jacket, but the cover image is printed right on the binding. It has 80 pages, but the pages are larger format so readers get about as much content as a manga, perhaps a tad bit less. Also, the production values are high quality. The paper is heavier stock than normal graphic novels, and very bright showcasing the brilliant coloring of the artwork.

Art is subjective, but I found the artwork here to be excellent, and extremely well done. Clean lines and good proportions on all characters and the text was carefully placed to retain clarity but not block any of the imagery. I found no typos, and the language fit with the period nature of the story. I enjoy yaoi, but sometimes the characters look a little feminine. Not so here, these are "manly men." Right down to having hair on their chests (and other areas ;-) Still, they were attractively drawn. It's a pirate story, so there's action outside the sex as well and the ending leaves room for more without cliffhanging.

I enjoyed the novel so much, I went looking for the publisher's site to see if there would be more from the authors. No news yet, but I really hope they do a sequel. Highly recommended to hard yaoi fans, and M/M fans looking for something new to try.

More swashbuckling goodness than you can shake a stick at.

I can understand exactly what Franze and Andärle mean when they say that their style is; nifty and thoroughly in the details. This precision makes the world of Black Wade incredibly rich and one that you will want to revisit often.

The opening is well scripted with a backstory that deftly gives you an understanding of Jack. A young man, engaged to the luscious Annabeth, but filled with forbidden desires for more masculine curves. Jack has great strength of character and integrity, but he is no match for the merciless pirate who captures him and subjects him to all manner of wicked, nasty goodness. Black Wade is a swarthy, likable rogue with much lustrous hair and beard. I'd like to give him pats. He also has rugby player thighs. These are the very best kind of thighs to have you understand! heh.

The art is incredibly beautiful. The tension and lust between Jack and Black Wade is palpable and so spectacularly hot. I think my favorite panels are of Jack when he is sleeping early on in the book and having some rather erotic and lickable dreams! I also liked the images of Wade lolling about in his room, ship, bath and bed. All of them! He is just lush. The whole book is so gorgeous and it is difficult to narrow it down to just one or two images. The emotion conveyed through the color is also a large part of what makes this such a memorable read and the moody, dark palate used in the picture of Wade on the bridge illustrates this point beautifully.

This is absolutely a must have and has to be one of my favorite reads I've purchased this year. It has everything, dashing heroes, star crossed lovers, bad guys, knee breeches, ships, rope, leather boots and more swashbuckling than you can shake a stick at. Clever, beautiful, utterly romantic and total 5 star plus read.

So, I liked it. Just a bit.

Grade 3-6-A colorful volume that is wide in scope but shallow in content. Ardley introduces many areas of science from electricity, to sound and music, to motion and machines. Each activity is given between half a page and two pages, and is illustrated with bright, full-color photographs that clearly show each step in the process. Two or three sentences summarize what takes place, but little of the science is explained. For instance, in "Fly a hot-air balloon" readers are told that hot air rises, but not why. The book does do a good job of presenting science as enjoyable and exciting. It could be useful if supplemented by titles such as Stephen P. Kramer's How to Think Like a Scientist (HarperCollins, 1987) and books on specific areas of interest, such as those found in the "Eyewitness Science" series.

Gr. 3-5. Many of these 101 science experiments are great, but there's also plenty of standard fare, such bottle gardens, construction of a circuit, and the perennial erupting volcano. What makes this book special is the clean, simple format with equally simple instructions. The experiments are grouped into 11 categories, including water and liquids, electricity, motion and machines, and the senses. Most of the experiments are laid out in seven steps or less. Crisp, color photographs and concise captions make each step easy to follow. Children of various ages are shown performing many of the procedures. A warning about being a safe scientist is fairly inconspicuous on the verso of the title page; a symbol for adult supervision is described there and appears throughout the text where cutting, heating, and potentially harmful substances are required. Young scientists should find plenty of ideas for experiments and activities that can be done with ordinary household items and found materials. Denia Hester

101 Great Science Experiments

My 8 year old daughter borrowed this book from the school library and my kitchen hasn't been the same ever since. She has turned into a regular scientist. This book is FULL of real life pictures and NOT drawings. It is a large size book so it is even easier for her to read. She made a thermometer with a clear shampoo bottle, water, food coloring, and a straw. When she witnessed the water rising and falling through the staw she started screaming,"I'm a genius, I'm a genius." This book is very kid friendly and shows how to do experiments step by step with a real life picture for each step. It even shows how to make a real camera with a paper towel tube, tussue box and magnifying glass. One of my favorite experiments is how to make your own flashlight with batteries, an empty bottle, aluminum foil, and a small bulb.

Successful purchase!

I bought this book for my 11-year-old granddaughter. We were both extremely pleased. I reviewed a lot of other science books before buying this one. I needed to make sure it wasn't too difficult OR too easy. I also wanted experiments that didn't require stuff she needed to go shopping for prior to doing the experiments. I sure made the right choice when I picked 101 Great Science Experiments!

Looks great, but...

The pictures in this book are wonderful, however, our success rate is 0.5 out of 4 for the experiments. I am sure many of the experiments will work, but not the ones we selected. Many of the experiments are quite elaborate, so unless your child is very ambititous, you will be doing quite alot of work.

Describe muy bien cada personaje, cada paisaje o lugar... Me encantó la historia y espero con ansias la segunda parte y las historias de las gemelas, de Ian y Renato, de Matt y Oscar...
