A 'provisional' 5 Stars...

...and here's why: This novella is actually two separate and complete stories/incidents in the introduction of the title character to the author's Double Helix universe. They involve her somewhat reluctant recruitment into the Mutant Affairs Council, a quasi governmental outfit charged with riding herd on the world's increasing numbers of paranormally talented citizens. Miriya is, herself, a powerful Alpha telepath, and the government wants her on their side. Being an independent sort, she is not keen on taking orders. The first story is the setup, plunking the reader down cold into the Double Helix world and jumping right into Mirya's recruitment as she is sucked in by a plea to help a friend. The story held me, but the transition to the second half was a little rough with only a few paragraphs explaining that seven months had gone by and her status as reluctant recruit had changed to full agent and Miriya was now 'on the job'. A little more explanation about the missing months would have left me more satisfied. Still,the second adventure was as enjoyable a read as the first, especially once I realized I was reading a teaser. Mind you, the two episodes are complete, though the second pulls in a lot of characters from the Double Helix universe and you are left wanting to find out more about it all as you are meant to.
.... So, why the 'provisional' rating if what you have here are two fine, five-star stories? Well, I read them while trapped in my tent during a rainy camping trip and was frustrated by my inability to get the full story, there being no internet access in the mountains. My frustration increased, when upon my return to civilization I learned that the character I had developed an interest in seems to be peripheral at best in the Double Helix epic. Maybe I am missing something, but when Miriya gets her own complete novel, I will be satisfied. Meanwhile, read 'Miriya'. It is certainly entertaining, especially at the price. :)

A story with heart

This story kept me involved with no problem of my mind straying. I had already read the book, Perfection Unleashed, so I found myself once again having read a book series in a backwards way. But its good to be able to say that it wasn't hard to read at all. Miriya just draws you in. She is a free wheeling, live by the seat of the pants, rule breaking survivor. Now, that might make you think that she is a harsh, uncaring woman but she's not. She has her own moral code but only lets herself have very few close friends. She can't afford to be on the grid of other people's attention. One group she definitely doesn't want to notice her is the Enforces of the Council, and the Mutant Affairs Council that they serve. She hates everything about the Council, hates that being on their grid could mean the loss of her freedom which she values so highly. She fears not only the loss of her freedom but also her privacy and individuality. As things begin to spike, she does develope some more friendships along the way, which was enjoyable.
I have to agree with a statement made about the Double Helix Book Set. Someone said that its, "Higher octane than Heroes. More heart than X-Men." That comes through loud and clear even in this Novella.

Short Novella in an apparent series.

I'm kind of on the fence about this story. On the one hand, I can envision the potential for a series, but as a Prequel type story, I felt like it was missing chapters. At one spot the Heroine was finally thinking that she might call the Council and consider working for them. Immediately after, she was apparently an established and experienced agent. I found myself turning back pages to see if I'd missed something.

Character development of the main characters was good, writing style is also good. The action scenes are well done. This book was really too short for me to get that involved with the plot, and the ending (?) felt a little rushed. Decent world building for a novella.

I think that the main series is already established, so maybe I would have enjoyed this book more if I'd already read those books. This book didn't really Wow me, but it was an OK read.

Back to her old self!!

Well, I am so happy to say that after the catastrophe that was the previous Wolves of StoneRidge book, Charlie Richards has redeemed herself, showing off the talent that was so rich in the beginning of this series! This book is right back up to the standards that we, her faithful series readers, have come to expect. The plot was full of fun, conflict, drama, excitement, and of course smokin hot wolf lovin!
**MINOR SPOILERS**
In this book we meet Rowan again, he is a history teacher at the local StoneRidge school and is asked by the alpha Declan to keep an eye on a transferring Senior who has a way with hacking computer systems. The student has been expelled from his former school for that very thing and has been shipped to his grandmothers house in StoneRidge to complete the final 2 months of his senior year and graduate. Well that of course is where the fun begins because this 18 yr. old turns out to be his mate, and still in the closet with an attraction only to older men! What ensues is a very good and interesting read that I am so happy was nothing like its predecessor. I am hoping that Ms. Charlie continues to hand out these types of books, the gargoyles, Kontra's ménage and a paranormal love included, because as long as they keep on like this, then I'll keep buying!

Not up to par...

I normally enjoy the series but this one just didn't do it for me. Rowen was very generic in character while William, he just was too much of a brat for most of the story. Also, this takes place in a school environment but there isn't any flack about the two becoming involved (teacher / student).

What I don't get is when characters make an appearance such as Lyle in the beginning, essentially have a single line, and disappear for the rest of the story. This happened with the previous story with Toby & Tullion (which I really enjoyed since many of the earlier series characters popped in) where Lyle was there but didn't have any lines and disappeared again.

"Life is perfectly imperfect"

Rowen St. Paul has a problem a serious problem this handsome shifter has found his mate and it is not a good time for it to happen. Being a Teacher it was easy to come up with words to define his newest and biggest issue...Taboo...Restriction...unsavory...Banned...not to mention his very own Eww factor flowing through his mind. Brad Wilcox is a professor of teacher education at Brigham Young University, where he also works with Especially for Youth and Education Week programs. wonderful book

This book is one of the very best I have read to explain the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Wilcox is an excellent public speaker and writes just as well. He gives examples and stories that help one to relate to the different aspects of the Atonement. It is not just for teens--it really is for everyone; though most of his stories are of college students or teens he has worked with. I gave this as a graduation gift this year to my Sunday School class (18 year olds) and my hope is that they WILL read it and apply the Atonement in their lives.

Understand the Atonement on a deeper level with clear teachings and excellent examples

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the new book, The Continuous Atonement for Teens by Brad Wilcox. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is central to my belief in the gospel and understanding how the atonement works in my life has made all the difference for me, especially over the past two years. I have went through some rough times and relied on the Lord to get me through. I've seen how putting my trust and faith in Him has made it possible for me to continue, keep moving forward, even when times are tough.

The reason I love The Continuous Atonement for teens is because Brad Wilcox explains the principles of the atonement and how it works in clear context. He gives excellent examples, inspiring stories, and so much hope for this gift that we've been given. I have marked several passages in my book and I'm so glad that I have this so that my own children can read it and understand how grace and works make the gospel what it is and how the atonement is for ALL of us ALL the time.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I believe in the Bible and the Book of Mormon--both works teach of Jesus Christ and the love our Heavenly Father has for all of us. I'm grateful that His grace is sufficient for me and that through His atonement I can continue to move forward and learn all that I need to while on this earthly sojourn.

The Well and the Mine is the story of one Depression-era family in an Alabama coal-mining town, and the single night that forever changes their view of the world around them. While the Moore family and their story are a product of my imagination, the world they live in was very real. It was a time and place shaped by the hard realities of poverty and racism, and there are still echoes of that world in the one we know today.

Let's start with 1931. Both banks in the coal-mining town of Carbon Hill had closed. The mining industry was close to shutting down, and 75 percent of the town's employment was tied to the mines. Property values were down 60 percent. For all the talk of an economic downturn now in 2009, the stark facts of the Great Depression highlight the gap between then and now. This was the Jim Crow South, with all the strictures of separate-but-not-equal in place. There was no Social Security, no disability, no Medicare or Medicaid, no aid for families with dependent children, no protection for unions. No heath insurance. It was, in large part, life without a safety net. And life was dangerous. If a man was killed in the mines, his widow and children could hope that neighbors or a charity or a church could offer help, but it was only a hope, there was no certainty. On the other side of hope was starvation and homelessness. Mining was demanding, mostly unregulated work. Each morning that a husband or father--there were no women in the mines yet--walked out the door, it was with a family acceptance of the chance that he might not come home. There was a very real chance that he could be killed during an average day's work. But that sense of life on a precipice is part of why this story appealed to me. In the midst of all the brutal labor and struggle and uncertainty, moments of beauty and transcendence have all the more power.

The plot of the book is entirely my invention. There was no baby thrown in a well, no investigation into the local mothers. Or at least none that I know of. But the people and the places do echo some real-life counterparts. Virgie, the Moore's oldest daughter, has my grandmother's sense of propriety. The youngest daughter, Tess, has my great-aunt's sense of fun. Their mother, Leta, has the efficiency and solidity of my great-grandmother, who died when she was 99 and I was 14. My great-grandfather, a coal-miner, died before I was born, but the stories about his razor-sharp sense of right and wrong are what gave Albert his backbone. My great-aunt still lives in the home my great-grandfather built, and I spent plenty of time in the house as I was writing this novel, sitting on the front porch and looking out over the woods, listening to the sound of the creek as I typed.

I grew up hearing stories about Carbon Hill in the 1920s and '30s being told across the dinner table or while sitting around the living room with my grandmother and her siblings. When I sat down to write the story of the fictional Moores, I delved back into my family's memories. Those memories helped bring 1931 rural Alabama to life--they gave me the sights and smells and the feel of the past. Bits and pieces of family lore found their way into the story, but also the domestic details and cultural perspectives that are hard to find in library books. Answers to questions like: What kind of underwear would you wear in 1931? What kind of floor cleaner would you use? How did a teenage girl feel about marriage? I never read good answers to those questions in library books, but I hear plenty of answers, simple and complicated, when I asked the right people.

And yet in the past, there are whispers of the future. The mining industry was unique in Alabama because it had an integrated workforce. In the mines, black men and white men worked side by side in the mines: It was a harbinger of things to come. Albert Moore wrestles with ideas of good and evil--of black and white--and comes face to face with complexities that haunt generations after him. Time and time again, he and the rest of his family struggle to do the right thing--and struggle all the harder to accept the fact that "right" may not always be such a concrete thing. It's that struggle, that drive to do what is fair and that need to see beyond their own perspective, that defines this family. And that struggle has as much relevance in 2009 as it did in 1931.

Superb Southern Novel from Debut Novelist

It's no wonder this book is getting huge buzz--it's a fantastic read that would appeal to anyone who loves Southern literature from the work of Fannie Flagg to Flannery O'Connor's; from Anne Rivers Siddon's books to William Faulkner novels. Really, this book appeals to anyone who loves a good story, rendered well. Phillips writing is somehow simultaneously fluid and hard-edged, and she knows her characters well enough to make their lives feel real to readers. This is one of the best books I've read in 2008. Highly recommended.

Too many narrators, jumps around too much.

This book is set in Alabama where I have lived all my life. It is about a family-Albert Moore, the father, Leta the mother, and the children, Virgie, Tess, and Jack. The book goes from each one of them being the narrator to another, on every one or two pages. Through that, we get the story but it was very disjointed.
At the beginning of the book, Tess, the youngest daughter sees a woman drop a baby down a well in their back yard. The rest of the book is trying to solve the mystery but it is intermingled with stories about the coal mines, poor families and their struggles, and the neighbors.
I got bogged down reading the book, and thought about giving up on it several times, but I continued. I would not recommend.

i find it impossible to believe that this is a debut novel. it's brilliant. i am stunned. just -- floored. everyone else has done a great job here of describing this story and its merits. what i cannot understand is how this writer has not been catapulted to fame, yet. this book should be in the window of every bookstore in america. it's absolutely flawless, a treasure. buy it for everyone you know as a christmas gift. yes. it's that good.
