Renuka Devi Choudhurani (1910 1985) was married off at the age of ten into a zamindari family. That was when her culinary education began, mainly from her father-in-law, but also from itinerant bawarchis and specialist cooks. As her interest in good food developed, she took to collecting and recording recipes. Ultimately, she published a two-volume Bengali work containing about 400 vegetarian and 300 fish- and meat-based recipes. From the simplest dal to the most elaborate biryani, her recipes are easy to follow, and produce delicious results.

This book contains a wide-ranging selection from the original Bengali work. It covers all the courses that might normally be served in a Bengali meal: starters, fritters, vegetables, lentils, rice, fish, meat, chutneys, dessert. Renuka Devi s eloquent autobiographical introduction is also included here.

A classic in animal social behavior

Nikolaas Tinbergen was one of the major figures in the development of ethology, the study of animal behavior. This is one of his earlier and most important works, studying the social behavior of animals. Later, he was a winner of a Nobel Prize.

This book begins by identifying social behavior as an important focus of study. Its aim is (page v): ". . .the presentation of a biological approach to the phenomena of social behaviour." Emphases? The behavior of animals in nature, studied via observation; the focus on three issues regarding that behavior--function of the behavior (survival value), causation, and evolution.

The book proceeds as follows: The first chapter defines social behavior and its importance, using a series of examples (e.g., the three-spined stickleback fish). After that, chapters consider the following aspects of social behavior--mating, family and group life, fighting, social co-operation, interspecies relationships, growth of social organization. The book concludes by considering evolutionary aspects of social organization, with an emphasis on using comparative methods. The last chapter suggests areas for future research.

As stated, nothing much new here--except that this was a pioneering work that set the stage for future and more sophisticated analyses. It deserves its status as a classic.

Very thorough

Dr Al-Faraje did an excellent job with this book ! I had some pretty comprehensive implant training, and I was getting this book solely to fill in the gaps in the event of a complication pre- or post surgery. This book does that part well. What I didn't expect was the overall review of proper surgical techniques and anatomy that you get as well. It is full of practical advice and guidelines that help in planning surgeries. A good buy for this type of book.

Inclusive and comprehensive review of causes and treatment

The unexpected bonus with this book was the extensive review of the surgeries themselves.The diversity of photos is impressive. Procedures, set-ups, surgeries, restorations and pharmacology is well handled. There is a feeling of completeness and satisfaction after finishing. The layout of one complication per page is easy to reference after reading once. Also constructive was the list of patient informed consents at the end of the book.

For much of the later nineteenth-century Britain regarded Russia as its main international rival, particularly as regarded the security of its colonial possessions in India. Yet, by 1907 Russia's political revolution, financial collapse and military defeat by Japan, transformed the situation, resulting in an Anglo-Russian rapprochement. As this book makes clear, whilst international affairs lay at the root of this new relationship, personal factors also played an important role in reversing many years of mutual animosity and suspicion. In particular the study explores the influence of the liberal anglophile Count Aleksandr Benckendorff, the Russian ambassador in London between 1903 and 1916.

By 1905, Russia's multiple weaknesses required a prolonged period of external peace by eliminating frictions with the principal rival powers, Britain and Germany, while France and Britain realised that a British rapprochement with Russia would be necessary to counter Germany's power. Benckendorff, as one of the most important figures in the Russian diplomatic service, persuaded Nicholas II and his Foreign Minister, V.N. Lamsdorff, to drop their objections to various long-standing British demands in order to pave the way for a Triple Entente. Although the overarching Russian strategy was conceived as 'balancing' the imperial rivalries of Britain and Germany, numerous factors - not least Benckendorff's energetic pro-British stance - upset the scales and resulted in a stand-off with the Central Powers.

Demonstrating how Benckendorff's fear of losing Britain's friendship made him oppose all Russia's efforts at improving Russo-German relations, this book underlines the pro-Entente policy’s role in setting Russia on the road to war. For when the Sarajevo crisis struck; there was now no hope of appealing to German goodwill to help defuse the situation. Instead Russia's status within the Entente depended on a show of determination and strength, which lead inexorably to a disaster of the Great War.

Robinson sets up a dialogue between feminist critical theory and contemporary women s fiction in order to argue for a new way of reading the specificity of women s writing. Through theoretically informed readings of novels by Doris Lessing, Angela Carter, and Gayl Jones, the author argues that female subjectivity is engendered in discourse through the woman writer s strategic engagement in representational systems that rely on a singular figure of Woman for coherence. Through this engagement, women s self-representation emerges as a process through which women take up multiple and contradictory positions in relation to different hegemonic discursive systems, and through which they engender themselves as subjects.
Finally, Engendering the Subject suggests how women s fiction can provide a model for a feminist practice of reading that would simultaneously work against the historical containment of Woman, and for the empowerment of women as subjects of cultural practices."
