This is excellent. Fogelson comprehensively describes the process by which LA attained its unique character as a city and how the region that surrounds it was affected by its remarkable growth up until 1930, then read this. Some of the sections on bonds and financing are a bit of a slog if you don't have much background in those subjects (I don't). But if you want to get a more nuanced account of why LA abandoned mass rail transit when most other cities embraced it and why so much of the cityscape lacks grace or forethought in layout and design, then I recommend this book. BTW I live here and like the city and find the place endlessly fascinating.

Hey! It's a Classic in Urban History!

Yes, this certainly is a classic in urban history. Fogelson succicently tells the story of Los Angeles, from it's beginnings as a Mexican backwater berg to the enormous Metropolis it became. Fogelson includes chapters on all of the important subjects: L.A. and its Mexican roots, the quest for water, the signifigance of new modes of transportation, the failure of the light water system, the development of the board, the conflict with San Diego, the public utility movement and, of course, the progressive movement.
Fogelson's history is academic in tone, but it's just such concise and well documented writing that you have to love it. A must for readers of Southern California history. I might add that although this was a book about L.A., the chapter on the L.A./SD conflict for Southern California supremacy was actually the best thing I've been able to dig up thus far on San Diego history! How about that, huh?
I might also add that you might want to track down a first edition hardback of this book, rather then paying for this overpriced reprint. The original hardback is handsomely designed and makes a fine edition to your book shelve.

Not for first-time readers of L.A. history

This book is really quite dull and outdated. It's a must-read only for die-hard enthusiasts of L.A. history who want to pick up a few more tidbits. For those with a budding interest, I recommend Blake Gumprect's highly readible and fascinating "The Los Angeles River" or Carey McWilliams' enjoyable "Southern California." If you add William McCawley's "The First Angelinos," Horace Bell's "Reminiscences of a Ranger," and John and LaRee Caughey's "Los Angeles: Biography of a City," you will have a much more well-rounded perspective on L.A. than you will get from Fogelson's book alone. Fogelson's book reads like a cross between popular history and a city planning textbook, yet with none of the interesting aspects of either style.

The title of this book lacks a question mark, but it needs one, because sociology professors Levin (The Violence of Hate, etc.) and Rabrenovic (Community Builders) ask far more questions in this hollow book than they answer. The project they have outlined, one made more immediate after September 11, is to understand hatred—and how that hatred so often leads to violence. Unfortunately, the project becomes mired in analytical quicksand. The problem is one of approach, and the authors include far too many isolated incidents and long-standing geopolitical disputes to offer a cohesive argument about, or prescriptions for, the admittedly complex nature of hatred. Rather than careening from instance to instance to diagnose the apparent pandemic of hatred (in the space of two pages, the authors move from Nazi Germany to violence against females in Uzbekistan and the anti-Semitic graffiti of disaffected youth), Levin and Rabrenovic would have done better to use fewer examples and offer more analysis to yield more valuable conclusions. Instead, they dance around the role in hatred of fear, revenge, evolutionary psychology and other factors. Also disappointing is the authors' tendency to oversimplify otherwise valid causes of hate and prescriptions for it with statements such as "[L]ike attracts like. When it comes to their peers, human beings seem almost universally to be predisposed to prefer being among people like themselves" and offer such advice as "Those who are victimized should seek help from the proper authorities, and they should act accordingly." Noble and worthy statements, but the authors' project proves unwieldy within the confines of this slim yet sadly inelegant volume.

Written in the painful aftermath of the September 11 Attack on America, Why We Hate reminds all of us that anyone can become an innocent victim of hate. Hate cuts across cultural, racial, gender, national boundaries.

In the first chapter, the book's authors give an excellent overview of the changing meaning of the term "hate" since the 1980s. In its common usage, the term has shifted from its original meaning "an intense dislike" and has instead come to be associated with hostile feelings toward the members of some group of people based on race, religious identity, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability status. Due to this transformation of meaning, hate has become a useful way to interpret criminal acts in which the underlying motive involves hostile or biased behavior such as racism, sexism or xenophobia.

Levin and Rabrenovic explore how prejudice and stereotype fueled by hatred can spur inter-group conflict. The two sociologists attempt to explain why hostile sentiments emerge between groups and the circumstances under which this hostility leads to violence. Simple but fundamental questions as to whether human beings born with a propensity for hate and violence are examined scientifically. The authors conclude that hating "the other" is learned behavior rooted in the environment, in psychological factors, and in the socio-economic characteristics of society. As it is highlighted clearly in the book hate also pays off in many ways for those who use it: Thus, "violence has benefits - psychological, social, and economic -for those who embrace hostile and vicious attitudes toward those who are considered different."

Why We Hate provides us with a myriad of examples of the expression of hate from around the world--from the streets of Jerusalem through the long-term religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland to the stereotype-based racial offenses in the United States. Such examples are of invaluable importance for understanding the mundane character of hate violence as it differs sharply from depictions in movies or television series. The authors demystify hate violence tremendously and then offer undeniable evidence that "ordinary people" frequently play a major role in the most horrendous acts of hate violence under specific conditions. The deportation of Jews, Roma, Slavs, homosexuals, and mentally deficient people during the Second World War or the massacre in Bosnia a decade ago suggest strongly that seemingly harmless or trivial acts like hate speech, political propaganda, and pervasive stereotypes may over time escalate into large scale ethnic violence. Besides exploring the large variety of factors that cause conflict, the book also sheds light on the growing levels of impersonality and indifference as one of the precipitants of hate in our modern society. The authors discuss the role of the mass media in forming the basis of a hostile mindset in future generations of citizens and argue that the producers of popular culture have a major responsibility for filtering out hateful imagery.

The book does not leave the reader without some important resolutions. Just as all of us may be harmed by hate, we ordinary people hold also the key to provide effective solutions. Real collaboration on the community level, peaceful civic efforts, women's organizations, cultural tolerance, and more democratic leadership are only a few examples recommended by Levin and Rabrenovic concerning how to combat hate violence in our social environment.

The book provides an excellent overview for college students and intelligent laypeople, but will also be useful for scholars interested in learning about recent developments in the scientific inquiry into the roots of hate and violence.

This book was thoroughly painful to read at times

This book was thoroughly painful to read at times. Many times the authors make broad accusations towards specific types of people based on actions - for example, all people who listen to metal are Satan worshipers, and people who wear flags on clothing typically have worse attitudes towards Middle Eastern people. It was written shortly after 9/11 and as such feels a bit dated in regards to overall perceived attitudes. Despite its flaws it was a useful look into hate, providing many possible motivations for hate crimes.

A cozy paranormal series like no other. Mystery and murder in a small eastern town. Four sisters discover they have inherited "unique abilities" as they solve the whodunit with the subtle input of their kitties. This is not your typical "cozy" or spooky paranormal. There are even a couple of chuckles within the pages. The recipes included from the sister's B&B are oh so yummy.

my kind of cozy

I read this second book in the series first. The author says that the mysteries can be read out of order but upon finishing this one, I went ahead and ordered the other three. I like cozies as a break after some of the heavier books I read and this really fit that space nicely! The author has a formula here that works well for me: a bit of the paranormal, but not too much; close family; pets that aid in the crime solving; setting in an Eastern coast vacation town. There are four sisters who really care for each other and each is unique in her "paranormal" gifts (although not all of them are developed yet in this book). Angie has inherited a Victorian mansion where her sister Ellie has set up a B&B. (another thing I like in my cozies because there are always interesting boarders) A large room is set aside for Jenna, Angie's twin, who makes and sells jewelry. Courtney, the youngest sister has just graduated from college and is working part-time in a candy store where the owner is a very unpopular guy in town. No one has liked working for him. His murder is the central mystery of the story but there are other mysteries as well ... shady art dealings and a theft, trying to discover why Angie was left this mansion and cash. I can see where this series could go, finding out the background and why Angie was left such an inheritance, blossoming romance (but not too much romance).
I love the characters, especially the brother of the deceased. a fast and easy read for a hot Sunday. Oh and there are recipes for some of the sweets.

A cozy mystery with paranormal twists

Angie and her sisters Jenna, Ellie, and Courtney are back in the second Sweet Cove mystery by J. A. Whiting. In the last book, we learned that the sisters may have inherited some psychic ability from their Nana. However, thus far only Angie and Courtney have exhibited any ability. All of the sisters are living together in the Victorian house that Angie was bequeathed in the first book. Ellie is running part of the house as a B & B. Angie plans to reopen her bake shop and cafe in another part of the house as soon as the house is through probate and she gets the money to do the renovations necessary for her shop. Her twin, Jenna, has already opened a jewelry shop in another area of the Victorian mansion.

Courtney, the youngest sister, has just graduated college and has been working for the disagreeable confectioner in town. She and Angie find him stabbed to death in his own shop. None of the townspeople are sorry to hear of his demise. His estranged brother shows up in town the day that his brother dies and has booked lodgings at the B & B. The girls are asked by Chief Martin to use their powers to help with the investigation. He had worked with their Nana in the past.

If you like your murders mostly gore free, this could be the mystery for you. I strongly suggest that you read them in order.

Liberalization of trade in legal services in the context of WTO

The reviewed book belongs to Gilles Muller. It discusses the issues of regulation of legal services in the context of WTO.
It is written in difficult language and students are not likely to understand it. It is also not for those, who is simply interested in legal business. It is an analogy of technical guidance to specific equipment.

The book comprises of three major chapters. The first chapter discusses regulation and liberalization of legal services. The second chapter discusses regulation of legal services in GATS. The third chapter discusses separate aspects of liberalization of legal services on trade preferential agreement in EU and Switzerland.

All three chapters contain large amount of information, written in a very laconic and concise manner. The author was able to fit the topics, which normally took up to several volumes, in 250 pages. In the one chapter, he discusses eight large topics, which are also subdivided into small topics.

On the other hand, it is praiseworthy that the author could discuss some many topics in such concise manner, and not only discuss, but also adduce useful examples.

In a relevant way, the author indicates the issues surround definition of legal services. Thus, in “Definition of legal services” paragraph, he does not straightforwardly adduce ready definition, but admits that the definition of this term is complicated by presence of divergent views of WTO members. The author refers to collective declaration of WTO members, where “legal services” notion is divided into several constituent parts. These are, namely, legal advisory services, representational services and international arbitration and mediation services.

Moreover, the author points to the existence of four modes of legal service supply: (1) cross-border supply; (2) consumption abroad; (3) commercial presence; and (4) movement of natural persons.

It is not clear what “movement of natural persons” means. Author explains it by reference to representation of interests of person who is in WTO Member-State through another natural person, who is in different WTO Member-State. If so, why is it a movement of natural persons? Why is it not a representation through natural persons? These issues can be in principle explained by idiosyncrasy of WTO terminology.
The book also discusses five major principles of liberalization of legal services in the context of WTO. It is transparency, absence of discrimination, prevention of unnecessary burdensome measures, recognition and promotion of competition rules.

The author also underlines the importance of preferential trade agreements. Such agreements are implemented through four instruments: (1) free trade agreements; (2) customs unions; (3) common markets; and (4) economic unions. Along with that, he also discusses the difficulties of implementation of these agreements.

Thus, for instance, he writes that slow pace of negotiations forced many countries to speed up the process of liberalization of legal services market through preferential trade agreements, and that Switzerland was compelled to conclude these agreements along with multilateral negotiations. Particularly, Switzerland has established four criteria, necessary for finding relevant partners. These are: economic significance of the country, current or potential discrimination against Swiss exporters, readiness of partner-countries to conclude preferential trade agreements and political opportunities, deriving from such agreements.

Discussing the legal services market in Singapore, the author adduces very interesting fact. He writes that Singapore authorities are very sensitive in regards to legal education and demand that candidates for law practicing licenses receive a diploma from one of four American universities or ten Australian universities. This list includes: Harvard University, New York University, Columbia University and Michigan University. Interestingly, there are no such universities in the list as Yale University and Georgetown University, which has highest ratings amount U.S. universities. Such discriminative attitude is also characteristic to some law firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg, who require from their candidates a diploma from Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Moscow State Academy of Law or Moscow State University. You do not even know who is better or worse: Singapore authorities or some law firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Deriving from above said, one should note that the book is difficult to comprehend but is very informative and useful for those who is interested in the field of regulation and promotion of legal business. These are PR managers, directors of law firms, partners of law firms as well as representatives of academia, who is interested in comparative analysis of legal markets of the world.

About the Author
John D. DeLamater, Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He created the human sexuality course at the University of Wisconsin in 1975 and has since taught it regularly. His current research and writing are focused on the effects of life-course transitions on sexuality. He is a Fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and the 2002 recipient of the Kinsey Award from the Society for Career Contributions to Sex Research.

Janet Shibley Hyde, is a Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, received her education at Oberlin College and the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught a course in human sexuality since 1974, first at Bowling Green State University, then at Denison University, and now at the University of Wisconsin. Her research interests are in gender differences and gender development in childhood and adolescence.

Be prepared to see real pics (not drawings, like the previous edition) of people having sex or masturbating. I'm fine w/ it, but some are not, so you have been forewarned. Our professor is actually quoted a few times in the book because he has written several books, maybe most notably What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality. I think you get more out of this book when the teacher's attitudes match the book's - open, honest, non-judgmental and full of a lot of good information. This is a good book for learning the history of sex and sexuality and how various attitudes (religious, western, etc.) came to be formed. We are only half-way through the semester, but I think it's safe to go ahead and say that I DO like the book!!

A book the whole family cannot enjoy.. well maybe separately.

I love renting books from amazon book rental. It is cheaper then the bookstore on campus. This book helped me get an A in my class, it has very good information and was used for a 300 level course. It is easy to read and follow through, if one were to read it just for the "Understanding of Human Sexuality"

About the Author
Jeff Lupetin Jeff Lupetin has been a national voiceover talent for over 30 years and a teacher for close to 15years. Check out his voice content on Loopytalk.com and his teacher tips on Ultimate Voiceover.com. His book, “Ultimate Voiceover” is available at Acting Studio Chicago and on Amazon as a paperback or e-book. Currently, Jeff is the new retail voice for HH Gregg furniture and appliance stores. In addition, he is a news narrator for TouchVision Tv.com. In the past, Jeff has voiced nationally for Off products and Coors Extra Gold, winning the Fairfax Cone award for excellence. His character work includes national spots for Raid as one of the infamous Raid bugs and as “I am Hungry” for McDonalds. Locally, Jeff was the Lotto Wizard for the Illinois Lottery and the voice of the “Fun for Some” campaign. Jeff has had a wide range of voice experiences and careers. Older gamers know Jeff as the voice of Gillian Seed in the Hideki Kojima video game, Snatcher. He still can be heard on the “Twilight Zone Radio Show” nationally. You may have caught him on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1960’s retro show, voicing and on-camera. Jeff’s career began as a children’s program announcer for WFLD-TV and WGBO-TV Super 66 in Chicago. This and his original Spoken Word material, “The Making of Dangertown” can be found on You-tube. Jeff hails from Ossining, NY and graduated from Northwestern University with a Radio-TV-Film degree. He is a Jeff Citation winner for the improvisational review, “MegaFun” with the Practical Theater company at Second City ETC.
 Jeff created the Intermediate Voiceover class for ASC and is also an adjunct professor at Columbia College, teaching Voice for Animation. He and his partner, David Leffel of BAM Studios produce high end voice over demos for students. He is available for coaching as well. He looks forward to helping start your career!! I Can't Recommend It Enough

Jeff Lupetin was one of my favorite professors at college with his Voice Acting For Animation class. He is such a great wealth of knowledge and experience, and this all comes forward in this extraordinary book. I can't recommend it enough, for any level of voiceover practitioners.
It recalls his own experiences, spins them for more general consumption and is encouraging and positive throughout, keeping of course firm roots in the reality of the career path that is voiceover work. It's funny, it's informative, it's in-depth in all of the things it touches on, this is absolutely one of the best books on the subject that I've ever come across and I'm honored to be able to learn from Jeff yet again from this book.

Smart and enjoyable. I was referred to this book by one of his students and I was not disappointed at all. It's very helpful and illustrates the harder trials of breaking out without being intimidating and instead very encouraging. A terrific and recommendable read.
