Reading Fredric Jameson, Angus Fletcher, Roland Barthes, and Craig Owens, and working with the semiotics of Charles Sanders Pierce, Golston develops a theory of allegory he then applies to the poems of Louis Zukofsky and Lorine Niedecker, who, he argues, wrote in response to the Surrealists; the poems of John Ashbery and Clark Coolidge, who incorporated formal aspects of filmmaking and photography into their work; the groundbreaking configurations of P. Inman, Lyn Hejinian, Myung Mi Kim, and the Language poets; Susan Howe's "Pierce-Arrow," which he submits to semiotic analysis; and the innovations of Craig Dworkin and the conceptualists. Revitalizing what many consider to be a staid rhetorical trope, Golston positions allegory as a creative catalyst behind American poetry's postwar avant-garde achievements.

Poetic Machinations demonstrates that, from 1930s Objectivism to 2010s Conceptualism, poets have written allegorically, that is, taken metaphors--writing as photography, history as assembly line, colonial politics as printing press--and turned them into 'systematic procedures for formal composition.' Golston reassesses marquee names such as John Ashbery, Lyn Hejinian, Susan Howe, and Myung Mi Kim, and he excels when analyzing 'formally extreme' poetry by Clark Coolidge and P. Inman. He twists the kaleidoscope and, suddenly, much writing that seemed illegible becomes pellucid.

Undesired canine behavior can generally be predicted by examining an animal's environment and care (or lack thereof). This book demonstrates that, more often than not, so-called aggression or misbehavior attributed to any breed of dog can be traced back to either an innocent misunderstanding of canine behavior or the deliberate and nefarious misdeeds of their human handlers.

A Must-Have for Animal Advocates

I agree with the other review I read for this book that the images are very graphic. However, the fact is that animal abuse is a terrible thing, and it is often a precursor for (or partner with) human abuse. This book does a great job of exposing the facts about pit bulls and societal violence. I learned a lot about breed specific legislation and better ways to combat violence in our communities. Animal advocates, this is a book you'll want to keep on hand and reference regularly. If you're concerned about the paperback version being too gory, get the Kindle version, which has far fewer images.

I don't hate pit bulls. In fact, I own one. And I got this book just to increase my knowledge on the never-ending issue about the breed's bad rap. It's unbiased, concise and written simply.

Excellent aqeeda (belief system) book vol 1

For anyone muslim who bought this with the intention of learning his releigion I can only say that from what Ive read in the first volume, the aqeeda (belief system) is on point. However, I researched further into Sheikh Ashqar and it seems he had some ties with Ikhwaan Muslimeen in Egypt. For anyone looking to attach themselves to the Salafi Dawah this causes a problem because all of the modern day scholars have spoken out against Ikhwaan Muslimeen because they promote tebelling against the ruler and are proponents of Sayd Qutb, who is also another person spoke. Out against due to his straying from the path of the Sunnah. So be on guard if you choose to read this series. It is written very well and the Sheikh brings a softer, deeper writing style than some of the other creed books out there that sometimes come across too much like a text book. If I had to recommend a book on creed and belief I would recommend Foundations of the Sunnah by Ahmed ibn Hanbal and published by Salafi Publications for a concise to the point understanding of belief and creed of one of the 4 Great Imaams.

Finally a book that fills the gaps!

I have been programming in C# from its birth.  I’ve had the opportunity to teach many levels of C# throughout the years and as a result I’ve read a lot of programming books.  Most of them fall into one of two categories:  Learn a language - Step by Step or Learn a Language - The Definitive Reference.  While these books are good at introducing the reader to the language and promoting a ‘point in time’ level of understanding they don’t typically build a firm foundation for retaining that knowledge.  That’s where Practice Your C# - Level 1 fills the gap.  
 
Do you remember learning your addition and multiplication tables?  If you were taught like I was you were given a matrix of numbers where you could derive the answer using any combination of 0 - 9.  I was taught the Step by Step method of using the matrix and could later use it as a Reference when needed but it alone didn’t facilitate learning.  However, in addition to the number matrix I was given hundreds of worksheets with hundreds of examples that I had to answer.  It was these examples (typically building in complexity) that really cemented what was taught in class.  
 
Practicing Your C# - Level 1 are those worksheets. If you want to really LEARN the concepts and methods taught in other C# books you need to supplement them with this book.  If you're a newbie, don’t use this book on its own, buy any one of your favorite programming books by your favorite author and then also buy this book.  Go through a chapter in that book and then execute and practice the corresponding examples in this book.  You can’t help but learn AND better yet retain what you’ve learned.

Overall, Practicing Your C# - Level 1 is a superb book that efficiently fills the gaps in learning a language.  When you are done with the book I’m confident you will have built a firm foundation to take your programming to the next level.  And if you are a teacher or professor you should absolutely consider supplementing your teaching with this text.  Your students will thank you.  I look forward to future levels of this book and other books by this author.

I just want to thank the author for this wonderful self teaching resource. I was just wondering when or if the other books in this volume would be coming out?? I would like to gain a deeper understanding of c# and this writing style/ teaching method is exactly what I want.
