A Villainous Love Story

Trick of the Light was a really great book to start off this series. I love the whole Anti Hero thing Megan Derr has going. How she explains the creation of them somewhat. How the heroes aren't really the heroes. Karl, an insurance salesman, finding his excitement when he rescues a super villain only to discover so much more about himself.
This isn't a long story. It's a novella for sure. But Megan is able to get so much in that you don't feel like you missed anything. I look forward to reading more of this series!

Mild Mannered Insurance Agent Meets Super Villan

Karl is an unassuming insurance salesman. He leads a simple life, has two cats and a watch collection. His is a family business, passed down from father to son and as a result has many devoted clients that Karl treats like family. He sees himself as plain, unremarkable, and happens to have a sweet tooth. His daily routine reminds me of an accountant. Everything is just so and done just right. He is fascinating to read about.
Trick is so good he's always disappearing on you. Those corner of the eye shots will get you every time! Little is said about Trick and that's okay. The mystery is part of his allure.
The city this story is set in is standard -- It's the super hero's battling it out that makes it unique. Who knows how society evolved to this point but I do know I'd never live there. I can't imagine being under the threat of losing your livelihood, your home, or your family. It takes the shootout of the wild west and multiplies it times 100. To think that Karl is so calm and he's always picking up the pieces. No wonder he loves sugary treats. I guess he knows business is always good.
While I enjoyed this story it was a bit disjointed. As a novella it couldn't delve into explanations and instead it jumped around. I don't know why people would live in this city in these conditions or why the law enforcement employs destructive super hero's. There's a monopoly going on and not enough page space to grasp. - Dan's Wife

I loved this book. And got a new favorite super villain! Incredible series with a new look into the superheroes world!
